This is a well-set up steel tourer that can also double as a handy town bike - or a gravel bike. It will suit riders of around 5'11 and taller.

I'm 6'5 and find it very comfortable. Although it has road shifters and classy 700c wheels, the gear ratios and tyres are more MTB style, for heavy loads and tougher terrain, and the rims and spokes have been chosen for robustness. The steering tube has only been slightly cut down, and still offers plenty of options for handlebar height. My son and I built the bike in 2015 around a brand new frame, choosing solid reliable components throughout.

He used it fully-loaded with front and rear panniers for a few cycle-camping trips, and afterwards as his commuter. It's never let him down. Before putting in up for sale, I've fitted a new chain and given the whole bike a thorough service.

It's running so well now that after I gave it a test ride, I didn't really want to put it on sale! It's a used bike - has been ridden and does show some normal signs of age (or, as I prefer to think of it'charm and authenticity'). The paintwork is slightly dulled and scuffed. Both of the shifters have been leant against walls at times, and are superficially scratched. I've painted over the more obvious scratches (see photos). The noodles on the brakes have surface rust on them (these can be replaced very easily and cheaply). One letter of the Surly decal on the front fork has vanished. Surly deliberately don't clear-coat over their decals so they can be removed by the purchaser. We'd already taken off some the larger, uglier ones on the sides of the frame.

As you'll see there are no mudguards. That was my son's preference, and it's why we could go with the mini-v brakes. If you wanted to fit mudguards, you would need to change the brakes for cantilevers or extra-large calipers; full-size v-brakes won't work with drop handlebar levers.
